Located in Maryland, United States, Lutherville-Timonium is home to an impressive selection of attractions and experiences, making it well worth a visit. The oldest section of Lutherville dates back to 1852, when it was founded by two Lutheran ministers as a planned community, anchored by a Lutheran seminary and church. The land was originally part of the vast Hampton Estate of Charles Ridgely, from whom it was purchased in 1851. As such, Lutherville is named after German philosopher Martin Luther. Timonium gets its name from the Timonium Mansion owned by one Mrs. Archibald Buchanan. Buchanan went through a rough patch late in life. Her life deteriorated to the point she felt like Marc Antony, the infamous Roman general and Cleopatra’s lover. Antony left behind an incomplete palace in Alexandria harbor named… Timonium. It is also noted that as far back as the early 18th century, Timonium was known as racecourse for Thoroughbreds throughout the eastern seaboard and that Thoroughbred racing continues to the day.

With its multiple rooms and rambling space, this brick hulk of a restaurant has the sensibilities of a chain. But it stops there. Bluestone Restaurant is a locally owned and managed seafood grille located in Timonium, Maryland. The food is terrific with all kinds of fish, an outstanding cioppino, plus other items. And, oh, those crab cakes.
Constructed in 1860, the Gatehouse was designed by the Baltimore firm of Thomas and James M. Dixon. Built in Tudor Revival Style, it provided for two living units, one on each side of the archway.
The Gatehouse resembled a Swiss chalet and became a trademark of the Sheppard. The neighborhood children viewed it as the home of Hansel and Gretel. A tenant alwavs lived in the Gatehouse until 2005.
The beautiful Rhododendron Drive was historically entered by driving through the Gatehouse.
In 2002 the entire Charles Street entrance was reconstructed and cars no longer entered through the Archway.
Erected in 1828 for making shot. Molten lead, poured through a sieve at the top, dropped into a tank of water inside the base. Height 234 feet, 3 inches. Diameter at base 40 feet. At top 20 feet. Owned by the City of Baltimore.
Enchanting remnants of Jerusalem Mill Village include the old Mill (and museum), still functioning blacksmith's shop, general store, mansion, tenant's house (private residence), impressive large stone bank barn ruins, Jericho covered bridge (one of only six in Maryland), and a lovely hilly trail straddling the creek and connecting the village to Jericho Road and the bridge.
A great way to spend the afternoon. This place takes a lot of time to walk through and appreciate. I would definitely recommend taking the guided tour of the mansion, it was fantastic. The furnishings, artwork and interior are exquisite. The tour guide was great and very knowledgeable. Make sure to spend time walking the rest of the grounds to get the full effect. Don't forget to hit the family cemetery, greenhouses, gardens and the other buildings on the property. I didn't even know this place existed before I picked up a national park passport!
